Sloppy Joe's Bar
Key West · Florida
Bar
- Iconic
Key West's most famous bar, on the corner of Duval and Greene, a favourite haunt of Ernest Hemingway with live music through the day and night.
Sloppy Joe's traces its official beginning to 5 December 1933, the day Prohibition was repealed, when Joe Russell, a friend of Ernest Hemingway, opened his saloon on Greene Street. Hemingway was a regular in the 1930s, and the bar moved to its present corner of Duval and Greene Streets in 1937. Today it is a big, lively bar on Duval Street with live music, and the home of the annual Hemingway Days look-alike contest each July.
Luxio Perspective
Go around lunchtime for a quieter first look at the room, or late in the evening when the bands are at their liveliest.
