Uptown's legendary jazz room, a Prohibition-era survivor with nightly live music and the long-running Uptown Poetry Slam.

The Green Mill traces its roots to a roadhouse at Broadway and Lawrence Avenue at the turn of the twentieth century, and in the Prohibition years it was linked to Jack McGurn of Al Capone's Chicago Outfit. Behind its green neon sign, the room still feels like another era, with live jazz on its small stage on most nights of the week. The club's current incarnation opened in 1986 and marked its 40th anniversary in June 2026, reviving late-night weekend sets. It has also been the home of the Uptown Poetry Slam since 1986.
