Bemelmans Bar takes its name from Ludwig Bemelmans, the creator of the Madeline books, whose whimsical murals cover its walls. Inside The Carlyle on the Upper East Side, it is one of New York's great hotel bars: low lights, classic cocktails and live music every evening, with pianists opening the night and a jazz trio taking over from 9 pm.
