The French Market's open-air coffee stand since 1862, serving beignets under a snowfall of powdered sugar with café au lait and chicory.
Café Du Monde has served coffee in the French Market since 1862, and its green-and-white awning on Decatur Street is one of the most recognisable sights in New Orleans. The menu is famously short: hot, square beignets buried in powdered sugar, and dark-roasted coffee with chicory, served black or au lait. Tables spill out under the open-air pavilion within sight of Jackson Square, often with street musicians playing nearby. It is a ritual best enjoyed early in the morning or late at night, when the Quarter is quieter.
