A frontier town built around Buffalo Bill's legacy and the road it opened west.
Cody holds the Buffalo Bill Center of the West's five museums, the relocated 1880s–1900s frontier buildings of Old Trail Town, and the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway — its own 52-mile gateway route through the North Fork Shoshone River canyon toward Yellowstone's East Entrance.
DISCOVER CODY
A frontier town holding its own history before the road west to Yellowstone begins.
The Buffalo Bill Center of the West is the anchor of Cody's identity, often called the 'Smithsonian of the West' for the five distinct museums it holds under one roof: one on Buffalo Bill Cody himself, others on Western and Native American art, Plains Indian culture, natural history and firearms. Seeing all five properly typically takes a two-day ticket, and winter hours are reduced. A short distance away, Old Trail Town is a deliberately different kind of place — not an indoor museum campus but an open-air collection of more than two dozen relocated 1880s-to-1900s frontier buildings assembled on the site of Cody's original 1895 townsite, among them Butch Cassidy's cabin; it keeps seasonal hours and is typically closed in winter. West of town, the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway carries US 14/16/20 roughly 52 miles through the North Fork Shoshone River canyon to Yellowstone's East Entrance, climbing over Sylvan Pass along the way. The byway and Cody's role as an east-side gateway are what this record covers — not any feature inside Yellowstone itself — and the pass closes seasonally alongside the East Entrance each winter, so current conditions are worth checking before departure. Rodeo culture supplies Cody's other well-known week: the Cody Stampede Rodeo has traditionally run July 1–4 at Stampede Park as the town's Independence Day tradition, though the event's own office had not yet confirmed 2027 dates as of the last verification.
