High desert light beneath the Sandia Mountains.

Albuquerque sits where the Rio Grande, volcanic mesas and the Sandia Mountains meet a city built on centuries of Pueblo, Spanish-colonial and Route 66-era history.

DISCOVER ALBUQUERQUE

A high-desert city built on layers of Pueblo, Spanish and Route 66-era history.

Albuquerque's identity starts in Old Town, the plaza and adobe streets first laid out in 1706 around San Felipe de Neri Church, where museums and galleries now sit within a district that traces back to El Camino Real. That history continues at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, owned and operated by New Mexico's 19 Pueblo communities, which presents Pueblo history and living traditions rather than a fixed historical narrative. The surrounding high desert carries its own record: the volcanic escarpment of Petroglyph National Monument, on the city's West Mesa, holds one of North America's largest concentrations of Indigenous and historic rock art, spread across several separate trail areas rather than a single site. To the east, the Sandia Peak Tramway climbs 2.7 miles from the edge of the city to the crest of the Sandia Mountains, exchanging desert floor for wide views back across the Rio Grande valley. The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History adds a different, more recent layer, tracing the Atomic Age through wartime history, energy and medicine alongside an outdoor collection of aircraft. Central Avenue's old Route 66 alignment still runs through the city as a reminder of Albuquerque's mid-century role on the Mother Road. For nine days every October, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta fills the northern sky above Balloon Fiesta Park with mass ascensions and evening balloon glows — the city's best-known event, though only one part of a destination that holds its own the rest of the year.

Old Town To Open Sky

Old Town · Sandia Mountains · Balloon Fiesta

History, Pueblo culture and open desert sky meet in a city still shaped by all three.

Albuquerque holds its Spanish-colonial Old Town, the living Pueblo culture of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, and the volcanic petroglyphs of the West Mesa within one high-desert city beneath the Sandia Mountains — a place whose character extends well beyond its best-known October balloon skies.

Journey Possibility

Start in Old Town's plaza and adobe streets, then move outward to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, the petroglyphs of the West Mesa and the Sandia Peak Tramway, timing a visit for early October to add the Balloon Fiesta without making it the whole trip.
