New Haven

Connecticut · United States

A 17th-century town green and a Gothic university campus, forming one combined civic-academic center.

New Haven Green, laid out in 1638 and still the civic heart of downtown, sits directly beside Yale University's Collegiate Gothic Old Campus and Sterling Memorial Library — the two together defining the city's identity.

DISCOVER NEW HAVEN

A civic green and a university campus meeting at one shared center.

New Haven Green has served as the civic heart of downtown New Haven since it was laid out in 1638, its 16 acres now a National Historic Landmark ringed by three historic churches. It sits directly against the edge of Yale University, so the two form a single combined civic-and-academic center rather than distinct districts a visitor has to travel between. Yale itself, one of the world's most prestigious universities, is represented here as one campus-level record rather than its individual buildings: the Collegiate Gothic Old Campus quadrangle and the landmark Sterling Memorial Library are freely viewable from public walkways and give New Haven its defining architectural identity, while individual buildings and museums on campus keep their own separate hours.
