DISCOVER MAMMOTH LAKES

A mountain journey experienced from the desert below.

The Eastern Sierra is best understood as a corridor rather than a single mountain town. US 395 runs north beneath the abrupt eastern face of the Sierra Nevada, moving between high desert, broad valleys and volcanic terrain while the range remains a constant presence to the west. Around Lone Pine, the rounded formations of the Alabama Hills sit below the granite skyline, creating an immediate transition between desert floor and alpine scale. Further north near Lee Vining, Mono Lake changes the character of the route: its saline water and South Tufa formations belong to a different geological story, shaped by mineral springs and a vast open basin. Beyond it, Bridgeport is a practical northern base for the road toward Bodie, where a preserved mining-era settlement stands in exposed high-country terrain. These places are linked by distance as much as by theme. Fuel, weather, elevation and road conditions matter, and a successful journey leaves room for the landscape rather than treating each point as a quick roadside stop. The reward is a road trip in which geology remains visible at every scale, from weathered stone at ground level to the mountain wall spanning the horizon.
